Ambition comments on DfE's new 'principles' for school accountability

Melanie Renowden, Deputy Chief Executive, said:

"We welcome the Secretary of State’s announcement today on the changes to accountability measures and the moves to create a clearer, more accessible system of school improvement that will benefit millions of children.

 "We know from our network of school and system leaders that the accountability system can be complex to navigate. We therefore welcome the efforts to improve clarity and transparency on the definitions of acceptable performance, the roles of multiple actors in the system and how underperforming schools will be supported.

 "As a charity dedicated to supporting leaders of schools in challenging circumstances, we firmly believe that school improvement can only occur with great leaders focused on ethical decision-making and sustainable progress. It's therefore particularly encouraging to see increased efforts to direct resources to the schools that need the greatest support and to give school leaders above the threshold the freedom to do the best for their schools."
